What You Can Do | Bougainvillea's Promises | In The Community | The Sea Turtles

Bougainvillea Beach Resort aims to encourage team work and solidarity to achieve our common goals of sustainable development. Our strategic intent is to minimise our effect on the environment of Barbados in the long term, by working today.

To this end, Bougainvillea has chosen to participate in Green Globe, the internationally-recognised tourism industry benchmarking and certification programme for environmental sustainability. Green Globe is more than a 'stamp of approval' - it is a collection of award-winning, innovative tourism operations demonstrating responsible behaviour for travelers. The Green Globe logo is an assurance that we are are committed to delivering a better environment.

We ask the support and assistance of our guests, staff, partners and suppliers in this endeavor.

What You Can Do

Specifically, we request the support and assistance of our guests in

  • Conserving energy by turning off lights, air-conditioning, fans, television when leaving the room.
  • Hanging towels on the rack to indicate a willingness to reuse them and allow linen to be changed every third day rather than everyday.  This will conserve energy and save hundreds of pounds of detergent and thousands of gallons of water annually.
  • Noting that we use refillable soap and shampoo dispensers to eliminate thousands of plastic amenity bottles from Bougainvillea's waste each year.
  • Disposing of cigarette butts appropriately and not to throw them on the beach.
  • Disposing of plastic cups, straws and other garbage appropriately.
  • Using waste separation bins as directed.
  • Sharing ideas on how we can enhance our environmental efforts.

Bougainvillea Promises to...
  • Recycle where possible, both in resort and office spaces.

  • Minimize resource consumption, encourage re-use and recycling and minimise waste.

  • Work within our community to improve the surroundings through beautification initiatives and clean ups.

  • Use natural resources, gas, energy and water effectively and efficiently.

  • Exercise international standards of environmental best practice.

  • Be a good corporate citizen cognisant of our social responsibility.

The Sea Turtles of Barbados

Once in danger of over fishing, Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles are now protected and monitored throughout the Island by the trong>Barbados Marine Trust.

Maxwell Beach on which Bougainvillea Beach Resort is located, is one of the few nesting grounds of the endangered Hawksbill turtle.  Guests may occasionally encounter hatchlings at night, trying to make their way to the ocean.

If hatchlings are seen, please advise reception immediately, so that the Barbados Sea Island Project can be informed.
